UPFA Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama yesterday said the government should be handed over to those who had demonstrated a Parliamentary majority.
"The other side (the UNP, the JVP and the TNA) have shown 121 seats. There is another vote on the 29th. The outcome of that vote too should be considered and the government should be handed over to those who have a majority," Welgama said, speaking to media in Matugama, his hometown, yesterday.
He said it is President Maithripala Sirisena who should make a decision on the matter. "We have seen enough and the country is in the doldrums. The President created this mess and he is the one who should resolve it," Welgama added.
"If the current deadlock continues, it will lead to the downfall of the UNP, the SLFP and the SLPP. That is why we need to work towards a resolution as early as possible."
Welgama said there was no way a party could remain in power without a Parliamentary majority.
"I have been saying this from the beginning. We should not have taken the government without a Parliamentary majority. The current crisis is detrimental to us," Welgama said, adding that a group of conspirators within his own camp led the party into the current morass.
