A group of UNP MPs led by General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam met with Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya a short while ago, to explain the party's position on the "unconstitutionality" of the dissolution of Parliament.
Parliamentarians Patali Champika Ranawaka, Ajith P Perera, Rajtha Senaratne, Harsha de Silva, Hirunika Premachandra and Chandrani Bandara were among the group that met the Elections Commission Chairman at the latter's office in Rajagiriya.
After expressing their concerns on what they termed an illegal and unconstitutional dissolution of Parliament, they requested the Elections Commission to make a fair intervention to protect the constitution of the country and the democratic framework.
“The Elections Commission promised to look into our issues and abide by the law," UNP Parliamentarian Ajith P Perera said, after the meeting.
Meanwhile, Asian Mirror also learns that members of the Elections Commission, led by Deshapriya, have discussed extensively the current political situation and the President's gazette announcing the election.
The members have agreed, in principle, that no election should violate the provisions of the Constitution.
The UNP, the JVP and the TNA and several other parties are expected to challenge the dissolution of Parliament in Supreme Court, on Monday.
