Chief incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple, Galaboda Gnanissara Thera, and Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith have discussed the possibility of going to the Supreme Court in a bid to resolve the escalating political crisis.
Sources close to them said the first round of discussion had already been held in this regard.
They also added that the prominent Buddhist monk and Cardinal Ranjith had also requested other several religious leaders to support their endeavour.
The two religious representatives are expected to hold another round of discussions with their lawyers, over the weekend.
The UNP, however, strongly holds the opinion that the current political crisis should be resolved within Parliament as it falls within the scope of the legislature.
Ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his party have not entertained the idea of seeking the intervention of the Supreme Court due to the latter's "limitations".
