November 05, 2018

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, in a hard-hitting statement, slammed President Maithripala Sirisena for violating in an unconstitutional manner, and stated Ranil Wickremesinghe was still the constitutional Prime Minister of the country.

He said Ranil Wickremesinghe would remain the lawful Prime Minister of Sri Lanka until another party proves a Parliamentary majority.

In his statement, Jayasuriya said he had to agree with the content of the motion signed by 118 MPs in Parliament demanding to convene the House immediately.

The Speaker also said the President, during a previous conversation, assured him that Parliament would be convened on November 07.

The Speaker, in the letter, said it was his obligation to convene Parliament on November 07, as per the verbal assurance by the President.

The Speaker says what is happening in Sri Lanka is a "despicable series of events that should not happen in a democratic society."
