The Finance Ministry has imposed a Special commodity levy of Rs 40 per kg from tomorrow on imported Big Onions and Potatoes.

The decision has been made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who assumed duties as the Finance and Economic Affairs minister. 

The decision has been made to protect the "local farmer" the Finance Ministry said.

Rajapaksa also said that the fuel price formula introduced by the previous government would be scrapped with immediate effect.
