Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader MP Udaya Gammanpila told reporters today that as per the Sinhala version of the Constitution, the removal of Ranil Wickremesinghe is constitutional. 

He said there was a difference between the Sinhala version and the English versions, and said the current government had made their decision based on the Sinhala version. 

He said further, that if the UNP leader felt his removal was unconstitutional, he could challenge it in court. 

Meanwhile, lawyer and academic Gehan Gunatilleke said the article about the Sinhala version of the constitution being different to the English version is completely baseless.

He said the Sinhala version of Article 48 provided for the consequences of the PM’s removal but didn't set out the grounds for removal. 

He also said that as per Article 46 (2) (of the Sinhala version) the Prime Minister could hold office for as long as the Cabinet continue to function, reiterating PM couldn't be removed for as long as Cabinet continued to function.
