Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan has issued a statement requesting Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to convene Parliament immediately. 

In his statement, the Opposition Leader called on the Speaker to summon Parliament immediately to enable it to perform its legitimate functions. 

He said his request came 'recognising the necessity of upholding the supremacy of the Constitution.' and 'recognising the supremacy of Parliament'. 

His letter comes as the Speaker himself told President Maithripala Sirisena in a letter today that any proroguement of Parliament should have happened in consultation with the Speaker.
