India broke silence over the constitutional crisis in Sri Lanka today requested the country's political authorities to respect the constitutional process.
“India is closely following recent political developments in Sri Lanka. As a democracy and a close friendly neighbour, we hope that democratic values and constitutional process will be respected. We’ll continue to extend our developmental assistance to the friendly people of Sri Lanka,” the Ministry of External Affairs said, in a statement.
The US State Department has stated that it is following the developments in Sri Lanka and requested the Sri Lankan political authorities to follow the due process.
The State Department made it clear that the Sri Lankan government should uphold its 'Geneva commitments' to human rights, accountability, justice and reconciliation.
The European Union has also urged the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the rule of law and abide by the constitution.
