Over 20 foreign diplomats are currently participating in a meeting with UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and his Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka at Temple Trees. 

Wickremesinghe, starting the meeting, has explained the current political situation to the diplomats saying he is still the constitutionally appointed Prime Minister.

The UNP leader has made it clear that he commands the majority support in Parliament. "That's why we have repeatedly asked President Sirisena to convene Parliament," Wickremesinghe has stated. 

Diplomats from the United States, the United Kingdom, EU, Indian, Japan, Canada and Australian were among the delegation meeting the UNP leader.

International pressure has already piled on President Maithripala Sirisena to uphold democracy and act in accordance with the constitution. 

The US State Department has stated that it is following the developments in Sri Lanka and requested the Sri Lankan political authorities to follow the due process. 

The State Department has also made it clear that the Sri Lankan government should uphold its 'Geneva commitments' to human rights, accountability, justice and reconciliation. 

The European Union has also urged the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the rule of law and abide by the constitution.
