UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is currently holding a crisis meeting at Temple Trees with the participation of all UNP parliamentary group members.
Several UNP Cabinet Ministers have publicly asserted that Wickremesinghe continues to be Prime Minister.
Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka tweeted that the appointment of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was unconstitutional, "and therefore not legal". He said it was "a breakdown of democracy, the very thing we all fought so hard for."
Meanwhile, Cabinet Co-Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne called the debacle a "Constitutional Crisis" and reiterated that Ranil Wickramasinghe is the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
