The police investigation into an alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena has reached a dead-end with a revelation that DIG Nalaka Silva, who is now under arrest, has conspired to kill ASP Prasanna Alwis, one of his subordinates, and not the President.
Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera told media this evening that Silva was arrested for attempting to kill Alwis. "There is no evidence yet to claim the DIG was connected to an assassination attempt on the President."
Gunaskera said even the voice samples obtained from various parties did not reveal a conspiracy to assassinate the President.
He said the alleged conspiracy on Sirisena's life is only mentioned in the police complaint lodged by Namal Kumara, a former police informant.
Gunasekera said further investigations on Kumara's phone would be carried out with assistance from foreign parties.
Alwis was one of Silva's subordinate officers at the Terrorist Investigations Department (TID) and had apparently complained to higher police authorities about the DIG's conduct. This has led to a dispute between the two senior Police officers, Asian Mirror learns.
