Controversial Buddhist monk Ampitiye Sumanarathana Thera has been caught on video attempting to assault the Chenkalady Divisional Secretary while scolding him in foul language.
Sumanarathana Thera, a resident monk of Batticaloa, attempted to assault the senior government official for attempting a cut a Bo tree that was obstructing an electricity line.
The enraged Buddhist monk accused the state official of carrying out an organised campaign against Buddhism. The same monk had been previously caught on camera trying to assault Police officers and several other government officials. No action, however, has been taken against him by the country's law enforcement authorities.
The monk attempted to assault the Divisional Secretary in the presence of senior Police officers in the area. The Police officers tried to calm him down without taking action against the monk for obstructing the work of a state official.
The monk yelled at Police officers demanding "free access" to assault the senior state official.
