Political advisors of President Maithripala Sirisena have come under severe criticism on social media platforms over his ill-advised remarks that may create far-reaching issues in the international domain.
Political observers have questioned the sanity of Sirisena's advisors in the wake of the controversy surrounding his statement on the RAW involvement in an alleged attempt on his life.
Although the story has been vehemently denied by the Sri Lankan government, 'The Hindu', a Chennai-based newspaper of international repute, said the story was verified from at least four Cabinet ministers who were present at the Cabinet meeting where Sirisena made the controversial remark.
In another desperate damage-control attempt, SLFP Minister and Sirisena ally Mahinda Samarasinghe, addressing a press conference this afternoon, said they demanded an inquiry from the President into the Cabinet ministers who provided false information to the press.
"It is a lame statement to make as none of the Cabinet ministers will not publicly admit that they spoke to journalists after the Cabinet meeting. In such an event, the President will have to use extensive surveillance on his own ministers, if he is serious about an investigation. Alternatively, we can look at it as part of the government's desperate, but ineffective damage-control exercise. They must have arrived at a flawed political calculation that a bold assurance of an investigation will placate India," a political observer closely familiar with the matter told Asian Mirror.
"The President has been badly let down by his advisors, They are tarnishing his public image by giving wrong advise and his popularity is on a downward spiral. His advisors are making sure that the members of his own government too are rising up against the President. This - I am afraid - is a precarious situation to be in," he explained.
