A day after accusing the Indian intelligence wing of plotting to assassinate him, President Maithripala Sirisena has met Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandu in Colombo today.
Sources close to the President said the meeting was aimed at clarifying media reports on the President's alleged remarks at the Cabinet meeting yesterday.
The Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed the meeting between President Sirisena and the Indian High Commissioner.
The Ministry also added that the President's remarks at the Cabinet meeting had been taken "out of context" by media.
"The Ministry wishes to emphasize that relations between Sri Lanka and India including at the highest levels of government are strong, encompassing multiple spheres including intelligence sharing. It is disappointing therefore that matters of this nature have become the subject of distorted and erroneous media reports taking the President’s remarks out of context, which has given rise to further media and social media speculation and the spread of unfounded fear among the public," the ministry stated.
