The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has expressed concerns about a notice displayed by the Community Police Unit in Habaraduwa requesting foreigners visiting the beach to "dress in an appropriate suit."
"SLTDA is concerned about the notice displayed by the Community Police Unit in Habaraduwa. "Dress code policing" is unneeded and unwarranted for tourists enjoying the scenic beaches of Sri Lanka. SLTDA has taken this up with all relevant authorities. We expect to see progress soon," the governing body of Sri Lanka Tourism tweeted, a short while ago.
The notice came under severe criticism on social media as such undue interferences are detrimental to the tourism industry of the country.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a spokesman of the SLTDA said they would follow-up on the progress of the matter.
"The duty of the regional Police is to ensure the safety of those visiting the beach, not to ask them to change the way they dress," he said.
