Former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka today made another controversial statement saying the Police would have ended up in the "current mess" had he given the Ministry of Law and Order.
Fonseka's name was proposed for the post by the UNP before the last Cabinet reshuffle but President Maithripala Sirisena shot down the idea. The post then went to Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara, a senior UNP Parliamentarian.
In an interview with a local newspaper today, Fonseka said the senior Police officers were working hand in glove with well-known underworld criminals and drug dealers.
Fonseka also added that the revelations he made on the matter had fallen on deaf ears.
"No follow-up actions were taken by the leaders of the government on the revelations I made. It is due to this inaction that the discipline of the Police had sunk to such appalling levels."
"The IGP alone is not responsible for the current mess. The IGP, the Police Commission and the people above them should take the blame for the current situation," the outspoken Cabinet minister added.
"If someone says the IGP is not suitable for the position, the National Police Commission to accept its responsibility. Who appointed unsuitable officers to top positions?" Fonseka asked.
"For instance, when I was the Army commander I was responsible for the conduct of the brigade commanders working under me. Had they acted like maniacs, I would not have been able to command the Army successfully," the former Army chief explained.
