Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayaka has written to David Richardson, the CEO of the International Cricket Council, asking about Thilanga Sumathipala's eligibility to contest the Sri Lanka Cricket elections.
In his letter, Ramanayake also asked specifically if Sumathiala was eligible to run for SLC Presidency in 2016.
“It is common knowledge that Sumathipala is directly or indirectly involved in gambling business through his family business," Ramanayake said.
The former SLC President, however, has publicly denied any personal involvement in the gambling business.Sumathipala has already made it clear that he will seek re-election at the next election of the SLC.
However, Sports Minister Faizser Mustapha has moved Sumathipala out of the cricket administrative body and placed the institution under a Competent Authority until the SLC election.
In the wake of the appalling performance of the Sri Lankan Cricket team, Sumathipala has come under fire from many circles due to his family's alleged interests in the gambling business.
