Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera's recent circular banning importation of vehicles by MPs using their permits has boomeraged on the government with a fresh revalations all MPs in the House have already imported their vehicles
Addressing the Cabineg briefing yesterday , Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said all MPs in Parliament had imported their vehicles using duty-free permits.
Karunathilake's revelation crystalized that at the time Samaraweera's circular was issued , all MPs had imported their vehicles.
"We get our permits at the start of the Parliamentary term. No one waits this long to import a vehicle, " he said.
However, the Ministed added that the circular would prevent Ministers from importing vehicles under their ministries.
"Even now I am using a vehicle purchased by Keheliya Rambukwella who held my Ministry under the previous government, " he added.
It was also revealed at the Cabinet meeting that nearly 8000 state sector employees are yet to use their duty-free permits to import vehicles.
