MR Asks Government To Increase Security After Reports On Alleged Threat To Kill President Sirisena and Rajapaksa Family Members

September 28, 2018

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said he had requested the government to increase his security in light of the recent revelation on an alleged plot to kill President Maithripala Sirisema, former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and several other members of the Rajapaksa family.

Speaking to media today, Rajapaksa said the ASP in charge of his security had officially made a request to the government on the matter.

The former President added that the assassination plot had indicated the need for more security and precautionary measures.

The government, however, is yet to respond to the request made by the former President.

Finance and Media Minister, in a statement yesterday, said the CID had not established the alleged assassination plot on the President and others.

"Several media outlets have since given wide publicity to false, unattributed claims that the CID had alleged in court that an Indian national had confirmed the existence of a plot to assassinate President Sirisena, Mr. Rajapaksa and others. These news reports are false, baseless and inflammatory. The CID has not, at any time, in either written or verbal submissions to the Magistrates Court, made any statement that could lead to the conclusion or inference that an assassination plot has been established or corroborated, " he added.
