President Maithripala Sirisena is to leave for New York tomorrow to attend the UN General Assembly.
Speaking to edia earlier, Sirisena said during his visit he would present a fresh set of proposals to the UN on Sri Lanka's human rights situation.
The President said he proposals would free whom he termed as war heroes from war crimes charges.
Sirisena is scheduled to address the council on the evening of September 25.
Despite the President's assurance, many human rights experts have scoffed at the President's idea as it comes against a backdrop where Sri Lanka has made little progress on the human rights front.
However, the President, during his visit to New York this month, is expected to meet the UN Secretary General and the UN Human Rights Commissioner.
