JO MPs Launch Scathing Attack On IGP Pujitha Jayasundara Over Alleged Assassination Attempt On President Sirisena

Joint Opposition MPs launched a scathing attack on IGP Pujith Jayasundara in Parliament yesterday over alleged assassination attempt on President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

JO MP Dinesh Gunawardena said the government was not paying due attention to the matter and even went on to accuse Speaker Karu Jayasuriya of trivializing what he termed a well-planned conspiracy .

"If President is assassinated, the Prime Minister will become the acting President," Gunawardena said.

Meanwhile, MP Vasudewa Nanayakkara said the Police Chief had a close relationship with DIG Nalaka Silva who is at the centre of the alleged conspiracy.

"Even today, the IGP had taken DIG Silva to the Kelaniya temple for a Bodhi pooja," Nanayakkara said.

Therefore, he added, it was unlikely to believe that the IGP would allow an impartial inquiry on Nalaka Silva.

MP Nanayakkara then demanded the government to remove IGP Jayasundara from his post an allow an independent inquiry.

NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa too echoed Nanayakkara's views and said Jayasundara's conduct had become a farce.

He alleged Jayasundara too was linked to the incident and demanded to "send him home" with immediate effect.
