Higher Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has written to the National Police Commission requesting to take action against Professor Chandana Udawatte, the former Vince Chancellor of the Sabaraamuwa University, for concealing evidence related to the death of a university student.
Rajapakshe has also requested the commission to initiate action against the OIC of the Homagama Police station for failing to conduct an inquiry into the death.
The letter has been sent in relation to the death of Amali Chathurika, a student of the Sabaragamuwa University, who committed suicide three years ago.
Writing a letter before her death, the student had said she was relentlessly ragged by two senior students of the same university.
However, the Minister's letter to the Police Commission says the Vice Chancellor has failed to cooperate with the Police over the incident saying it would tarnish the image of the university.
It also states that the Homagama OIC at the time of the death has taken the matter 'trivially' and has not pursued a comprehensive investigation.
The letter also stresses need for a fresh investigation into the death of the student and to take stern action on those responsible for her suicide.
