Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's office, in a statement, refuted reports that new chairs would be purchased for Parliamentarians.
In his statement, the Speaker said there was no plan what so ever to buy new chairs for Parliamentarian and there was no need for a replacement of that nature.
It said a future speaker would make a decision on that should the need arose.
The statement, however, added that there was a need to upgrade facilities in Parliament as it is visited by a large number of people on a daily basis.
According to the statement, nearly 3500 people, including students and foreign dignitaries, visit the Parliamentary complex in Kotte.
"But, such renovations will not be done in a wasteful manner, burdening tax payers," the statement said.
"Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, since the time he took office, has not even bought a new vehicle although he is entitled to one. Therefore, Parliament too will follow the Speaker's example," the statement added.
