China, through top level diplomatic channels, has asked from the Sri Lankan government if a "discomforted neighbour" was behind the protests in Jaffna against the housing project funded by Beijing, Asian Mirror learns. 

This comes in the wake of the public resistance to the Chinese-funded project to build 40,000 houses in the Jaffna district. 

The Indian media reported that while China wanted to build houses made of concrete in the conflict-ravaged area, the locals want homes made of bricks in the traditional fashion. 

Beijing, however, is of the view that there was some 'foul play' behind the outcry against this project. It is in this context that China has made the inquiry through its diplomatic channels in Colombo, informed political sources said. 

This was the first time China committed to a substantial rural infrastructure project in the country. 

The fact that China's committed to an infrastructure project in Jaffna - just 60 miles away from the southern tip of India - has obviously discomforted New Delhi. 

However, government sources told Asian Mirror that no final decision had been reached on the future of Chinese housing project in Jaffna.
