Chairman of the Maharagama Urban Council Tiraj Piyaratne said in an TV interview that he did not put up a notice directing people to address him "Sir."
However, he admitted during the interview that he had verbally asked people call him "Sir."
"It's important that they address me with respect as I am in charge of the daily affairs of the council," the 27 year old Urban Council Chairman said, in an interview with Derana.
He said the notice, which went viral on Facebook and Twitter, had been prepared by his political opponents.
"I'v been subjected to harassment since the time I contested the election. This is nothing new to me," he said.
The UC Chairman stated that "some people" working at the council were reluctant to give him the due respect.
"But they can't stop me. I will continue my service to the people without any difference," the Chairman added.
Piyaratne identifies himself as an ardent supporter of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
