Higher Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said there would not be a cable car project in Sigiriya.
The Central Cultural Fund coming under the Cultural Affairs ministry was in process of implementing a cable car project in Sigiriya - one of Sri Lanka's most visited cultural sites. The project was funded by China.
The idea of the project was to allow those who could not climb the Sigiriya rock to enjoy the scenic view of the site.
The Minister has ordered to stop the project due to fears that the cable cars would damage the 2000 year old establishment.
The Sigiriya was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982.
