The UNP will field its leader as the Presidential Candidate of 2020, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

Addressing media yesterday, Kariyawasam stated that no other candidate would pose a formidable threat to the UNP leader at the Presidential election. 

"That includes former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa," he said. 

"We told the public that our candidate would win the Presidential election of 2015 and it happened. Similarly, our candidate will win the Presidential election in 2020," he added.

Kariyawasam made this remarks while launching a statement titled 'Saththaya' published by the UNP.
