Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Commission has received ‘A’ status accreditation from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
One of the main functions performed by the GANHRI is to assess if applicants deserve membership to the forum based on compliance to the Paris Principles.
The UN General Assembly adopted the Principles in 1993 as the standard by which a national human rights commission is to be assessed.
Of the 120 NHR commissions to be assessed this year, only 77 were granted ‘A’ status – and Sri Lanka, India and Nepal the only three in South Asia.
