Former Central Bank Governor and senior public servant A.S. jayawardena has passed away. 

Jayawardena was 82 years old when he passed away at his residence in Nugegoda. 

He was also te Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance & Treasury and an Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund. 

Jayawardena began his career at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in 1958, as a Junior Executive. 

In 1994 he was appointed as the Chairman of the Bank of Ceylon. In 1998, he was appointed as Governor of the Central Bank which he held till retirement in 2004.
