EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda said the people in the Northern province are heavily inconvenienced by the prevailing drought situation.
Speaking in PArliament yesterday, Devananda said people were in a destitute condition as their livelihoods had been affected.
The EPDP leader made this remark while other parts of the country were dealing with heavy rains, landslides and floods.
Devananda said the rapid deforestation in many parts of the Northern province was the main reason for the drought.
He urged the government to intervene in the situation immediately and provide relief to the people.
He also said it was President Maithripala Sirisena's responsibility to bring deforestation to an end as he is the Minister of Environment.
