Incumbent Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, Thilanga Sumathipala has submitted his name to be considered for the post of Chairman of the apex cricket governing body at elections that will be held on May 31.
Nishantha Rananatunga, who was the former Chairman of Mihin Lanka and is brother to World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga had also submitted his name for Chairman. Ranatunga was previously Secretary of the SLC.
Former Sri Lanka Cricket Vice-Presidents Jayantha Dharmadasa and Mohan de Silva are also vying for the position.
There is controversy surrounding the appointment of Sumathipala for the role of Chairman, as he is linked to a betting institution and the Sports Law sets out that those ‘directly or indirectly involved in carrying out the business of gaming, betting or wagering’, are ineligible to contest.
