The SLFP Central Committee requested all party members who did not wish to remain in the unity government to "make a decision fast."
A Central Committee member, speaking to Asian Mirror said, the party was sharply divided over the question whether it should leave the goverment.
He said it looked as if the majority of Central Committee members were in favour of quitting the government.
However, the two General Secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA are strong backers of the current administration.
Although it was expected that the Central Committee would hold a vote on the matter yesterday, it did not happen.
