The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has reportedly summoned Azzam Ameen, BBC correspondent in Sri Lanka, to record a statement over one of his retweets.
Colombo Gazette, a Sri Lankan news website, has reported that Ameen has been asked to appear before the CID tomorrow over his tweet and comment on the President's Twitter profile.
“You are a wonderful speaker. But how do you ensure they turn into action. Show by doing!” Advice to President Sirisena from his own @PMDNewsGov,” Ameen had tweeted.
"In the short time that my administration has been in power, we were able to introduce many progressive legislative reforms. We hope to bring about many more new Acts to strengthen our democracy," the President tweeted last evening.
A minutes later, the President's Media Division Twitter account responded to the tweet saying, "you are a wonderful speaker. But do you ensure they turn into action. Show by doing!"
It was not entirely clear as to how this strange Twitter response came from the official Twitter account of the PMD.
"It seems for a brief moment the @PMDNewsGov twitter was compromised. The account has now been recovered and PMD is investigating the matter," the PMD tweeted a little later, explaining the debacle.
