Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala too will resign from his position tonight, State Minister Dilan Perera said, a shirt while ago.
Perera made that revelation after a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena at the latter's official residence at Paget Road.
Perera said Sumathipala too would tender his resignation along with other SLFP MPs who voted against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the no-confidence vote.
The UNP even mulled a no-confidence motion against Sumathipala claiming the latter acted in a partial manner during the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister.
The SLFPer said they would leave the government tonight and start functioning as an opposition group from tomorrow.
When asked whether they would join hands with the Joint Opposition, Perera said, "We will invite them to join hands with us".
