Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said 30% of Sri Lanka's overall power generation will be through renewable energy, by 2020.
"By 2030, our aim is to increase this share to 50%," the Minister said, addressing an event in the Hambanthota district.
He added that Sri Lanka's surrounding and the natural environment allows the country to focus more on renewable energy sources.
"As Sri Lanka is an island, we have enough water resources, solar power and the wind to generate electricity. We must make use of that," he added.
The Minister also stated that the government had launched a comprehensive campaign to make more use of renewable energy sources.
