UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim has voluntarily resigned from his party position a short while ago. 

Sources close to Hashim said the decision was made to pave way for new board of officials of the party. 

Hashim held the General Secretary post of the party for over 3 years. 

The new board of officials of the UNP is expected to be appointed within the next two weeks. 

Education Minister Akila Viraj Akriyawasam is tipped to be the new General Secretary of the party.
