The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, led by President Maithripala Sirisena, is currently in utter disarray with different spokesmen from the party presenting different viewpoints on the party's position on the no-confidence motion.
State Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, following a meeting with President Sirisena at the latter's official residence in Colombo this morning, said the party would abstain from voting tonight.
The decision was arrived as a sizable proportion of party MPs did not want to quit the government by voting in favour of the no-confidence motion.
However, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, another state minister representing the SLFP said there was no decision to abstain from voting.
Abeywardena said the party would vote in support of the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister.
The vote on the no-confidence motion is scheduled to be taken at 9.30 pm.
