US ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap today hit out at the ban imposed by the Sri Lankan government on social media and several messaging platforms.
"The longer the #SriLanka #SocialMediaBan persists, the greater the damage to tourism, the IT sector, business, and the nation's reputation for freedom and openness. So many Sri Lankans also rely on #socialmedia to connect with loved ones oversea," the Ambassador tweeted, a short while ago.
However, it is still not clear as to when the Sri Lankan government will lift the ban.
It is learnt that a discussion will take place between the Sri Lankan government and officials from Facebook Inc. on Thursday.
Sri Lanka's Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando said the ban would be lifted on Friday, depending on the progress of the discussion.
