In a farcical turn of events, some prominent figures in the government, including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando, have violated their own ban on social media.
All of them have updated their Facebook profiles despite the countrywide ban on Facebook and several other social media platforms. As their social media teams are based in Sri Lanka, it highlights the fact that the bigwigs of the government violate their own ban and sneak into social media.
Interestingly, Digital Infrastructure Minister Harin Fernando said they were able to trace the people who use social media in Sri Lanka despite the ban.
"If that is the case, then the Minister only has to look in the mirror," a commentator said.
However, the n government has repeatedly assured that the ban on social media was temporarily. They are yet to announce as to when this ban will be lifted.
This is the first time Sri Lanka imposed a ban on social media and messaging apps.
