The US State Department issued a security warning to all US citizens currently in Sri Lanka.
The security alert is aimed at ensuring the safety of US citizens in Sri Lanka in the wake of recent racially motivated violence against muslims.
"The Sri Lankan government declared a State of Emergency and curfews have been imposed in some regions, including #Kandy Administrative District, due to communal unrest. Further incidents possible over the next few days. Monitor local media for updates," the alert said.
However, the Sri Lankan tourism authorities, this evening, said the country would take every possible action to ensure that the recent incidents in the Kandy district do not cause any inconvenience to tourists in the area.
"Recent incidents in Digana and Theldeniya are isolated and have no impact on travelers. An island wide state of emergency has been declared purely as a precaution and as a way of facilitating action of the law enforcement mechanism," a spokesman from the ministry said.
