State Enterprise Development Minister Lakshman Kiriella's name has been suggested as a potential candidate for the post of Law and Order Minister.
Although former Amy Commander Sarath Fonseka was tipped to be appointed to the post earlier, the move came under criticism from both the UNP and SLFP circles.
Therefore, President Maithripala Sirisena changed his mind at the last moment and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe took up the position temporarily.
Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne last week announced that Wickremesinghe would only hold the position for two weeks.
"It could be Fonseka, or it could be someone else. But a new minister will take over the ministry," he said.
It is in this context that Kiriella's name has been suggested as a potential candidate for the post.
Kiriella, a lawyer by profession, held the ministry of Highways and Higher Education earlier and was given a new ministry at the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
