State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe has held discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena this morning, for a possible crossover, informed political sources said.
Senasinghe, who was at the centre of the Treasury Bonds fiasco, has expressed his willingness to form a new government. Many political observer dubbed Senasinghe as a politician who was directly responsible for the UNP's setback at the Local Government election.
It is learnt that the possibility of getting the support of UNP MPs to appoint Karu Jayasuriya as the Prime Minister has also been discussed at the meeting.
When contacted by Asian Mirror, a senior UNP official said Senasinghe had met the President without any approval from the party.
"Ranjan Ramanayake met the President this morning and he kept the party informed. Sujeewa did not seek any approval. Therefore, we suspect it is a 'mischievous' move," he added.
