The Government Information Department of Sri Lanka referred to the visiting Prince Edward as the Duck of Edinburgh in one of its official documents.
The Department, which handles information of the Sri Lankan government, may have attempted to refer to Prince Edward as the Duke of Edinburgh - a title held by his father, Prince Phillip, according to the English tradition.
Prince Edward's title is 'The Earl of Wessex', a position previously held by his father, the Duke of Edinburgh.
The document was sent out to media seeking coverage for an event at Temple Trees on February 04, with the participation of Prince Edward and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The 'Duck of Edinburgh' document was signed by L.P. Thilakaratne, the Head of Publicity, of the Government Information Department.
The farcical letter has been ridiculed by many a Sri Lankan journalist on social media platforms.
The date mentioned in the document is also wrong, as it says "February 04, 2017." the year, however, has been corrected later, manually, before the circulation of the letter.
The Government Information Department comes under the Minister of Media and Finance, headed by Minister Mangala Samaraweera.
