Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Roshan Ranasinghe said former Defence Secretary would be the Joint Opposition's Presidential candidate at the next Presidential election.
Ranasinghe made this revelation while addressing an election meeting in the Polonnaruwa district, yesterday.
"As long as they came to power, they introduced a constitutional amendment to prevent former President Rajapaksa from running for presidency again," Ranasinghe said.
"But it doesn't matter. We have someone who helped Rajapaksa in ending the three decade long war. He is Gotabaya Rajapaksa," the MP added.
However, many political observers have stated that the former Defence Secretary will not be able to run for presidency unless he get his US citizenship revoked.
The 19th Amendment also barred dual citizens from contesting elections in Sri Lanka. It shut out two influential members of the Rajapaksa family of electoral politics.
The former Defene Secretary had stated that he was willing to enter active politics. However, the status of his dual citizenship is still a closely guarded secret.
