Giving a funny twist to the dramatic Cabinet meeting yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said President Maithripala Sirisena walked out of the Cabinet meeting for a nature's call.
The Cabinet Spokesman, also the Health Minister of the government, vehemently denied the fact that the President Sirisena stormed out of the Cabinet meeting, after making an emotional speech.
The Cabinet Spokesman's version of what took place at the Cabinet meeting last week sent ripples of laughter across the auditorium of the Government Information Department where the Cabinet briefing was held.
It was widely reported in the media that Sirisena stormed out of the Cabinet meeting yesterday, lamenting he was being attacked by both parties.
This outburst came in the wake of a chain of events that weakened President Sirisena's position in his own government.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was the one who brought Sirisena back to the Cabinet meeting after the initial drama.
"The Premier had a long closed-door discussion with the President and brought him back to the meeting, after about an hour," a cabinet minister told Asian Mirror yesterday. Ministers Champika Ranawaka, Malik Samarawickrama, Rajitha Senaratne, Mahinda Samaraweera and Mahinda Amaraweera had been present when the Prime Minister pacified with the President.
