President Maithripala Sirisena said he would not allow any LG member elected under the SLFP to commit wrongdoings and pledged he, as the Chairman of the party, would take that responsibility. 

The President stated that decent candidates should be elected at the Local Government election to make progress on development goals. 

The Presiden, addressing an election meeting in Higurakgoda, Polonnaruwa, said the people should fulfill their responsibility first by electing the right candidates. "It is the first step to create a corruption-free political culture in the country," he added.

"We should elect disciplined members for Local Government institutions as it is the first step of creating national political leaders. It will steer the country's national politics in the right direction," he added.
