The wife of Saruwa Liyanage Sunil, a candidate of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha, has now started her election campaign.

Saruwa Sunil, the former Chairman of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha, was the man who allegedly threw a party to celebrate raping 100 virgins. His conduct was widely criticized during the Presidential election campaign of President Maithripala Sirisena who was the common candidate of the opposition.

After the election, however, Saruwa Sunil aligned himself with Sirisena and as a result, his wife had the opportunity to contest the Local Government election on the SLFP ticket. 

Sunil, according to party sources, could not contest the election this time as he was undergoing a court case over a child abuse. However, it is learnt that Sunil is the main architect of his wife's election campaign. 

In her posters, Saruwa Sunil's wife Magalika has used the photographs of her husband and State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, who is also a supporter of President Sirisena. 

Saruwa Sunil's initials (SLS) have been used in the posters in an attempt to communicate to party supporters that Mangalika is a proxy candidate for Saruwa Sunil.
