In a desperate bid to recommence train services in the face of a long-drawn trade union action, the government has now recalled retired engine drivers, railway guards, station masters and other workers, with immediate effect.
They have been informed to report to the Railway headquarters in Colombo, as soon as possible.
President Maithripala Sirisena, in a special gazette notification last week, declared the service service an essential one.
The government also warned the strikers that those who disregard the warning will be considered as ones who have vacated their position.
The talks between the railway trade unions and President's Secretary Austin Fernando failed to produce a positive outcome last night.
