President Maithripala Sirisena conducted an inspection visit to the Moragahakanda reservoir with several senior state officials.
During his visit, the President also released water for the research on the electricity generation at Moragahakanda, at an auspicious time.
"Today, turbines started turning at Moragahakanda. This is a dream come true for myself and the people of Rajarata," Sirisena tweeted, after the event.
The Moragahakanda reservoir reached the required sea level 178m for the electricity generation due to high rainfall.
The research on electricity generation will be carried out for four days and then will add Megawatt 25 to the national grid.
