Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has convened a party leaders meeting today to discuss the inclement weather conditions and relief measures to people living in the affected areas.
The Parliamentary sessions will be concluded at 6 pm today to allow MPs to visit their electorates and handle relief measures.
The government has already decided to pay compensation to those whose houses were damaged due to strong wings and heavy rains, government sources said.
Meanwhile, the failure on the part of the Meteorology Department when it came to predictions will also be discussed at the meeting.
"It is surprising that the Met Department kept denying the possibility of strong wings even after international reports predicted such an event. This is not the first time the Met Department let down the public," a senior Cabinet minister told Asian Mirror this morning.
The Police and Tri-forces have been kept on stand-by mode today as well, under instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena and Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka.
